about

This song came out of a songwriting challenge. The idea was to use one word from a list of suggestions as inspiration for writing a new song. I looked at the list and decided it would be fun to write a song that incorporated all of them. The words were: Marty, trance, departed, singular, guitar, heartstrings and trouble. I'm not sure where I got the idea of the song narrative, but I really enjoyed playing with the voice of the song. We often hear heartbreak songs from the point-of-view of the person enduring the pain. Giving the character the name Marty allowed me to take a third-person view of the story, writing it from the perspective of a friend watching the breakup.

lyrics

I saw Marty in the rain again last night

He was wandering in a trance-like dance

I saw Marty walking naked in the rain again last night

and this dance is more by habit than by chance.

About a month ago, this unraveling started

That's about the time that you - yes, you - departed

I saw Marty fall apart at the collision of
his heart,
his mind, his soul and his new singular position.

He strummed the angel's harp

When he was swinging on your star

But when you left the heart-strings broke

 on his emotional guitar.

I saw Marty and the way he used to look at you

But he was blind to what the rest of us all knew

That you would someday just decide to up and go, but did you know

All the trouble that you'd put old Marty through.

He strummed the angel's harp

When he was swinging on your star

But when you left the heart-strings broke

 on his emotional guitar.
